1991-1995 Anime PrimerOtaku no Video (1991)The year is 1982 and a golden age of anime is being ushered in by a group of enthusiasts soon to become known collectively as otaku. Kubo, an ordinary college student, stumbles onto the road of otakudom after a chance encounter with his old classmate, the gregariously dorky Tanaka. Outraged by the way society shuns them for their interests, the pair vows to create a paradise for their fellow nerds over which they shall rule as kings… Otakings!Otaku no Video is a two-part OVA produced by Gainax and penned by one of its founding members, self-proclaimed otaking Toshio Okada. It is divided into two parts: the animated segment, outlined above, and a live-action mockumentary titled Portrait of an Otaku. The former captures the energy and excitement of a generation of fans whose creative influence would change the landscape of the anime industry and the culture that surrounds it forever; the latter casts a harsh if humorous light on the seedy side of obsessive fandom. This juxtaposition between ardent love of the medium and a sardonic self-awareness of the foibles of its fanbase would set the tone for Gainax’s output during the 90s. But in the end, Otaku no Video’s earnestness shines through. Packed with detailed callbacks and nostalgic references, it’s a love letter to the otaku youth of its creators and a tribute to one of the most defining periods in animation history.Otaku no Video is available on DVD and Blu-ray from AnimEigo. -- source link
