Cover pages from the Lindisfarne Gospels said to be illustrated by Eadfrith of Lindisfarne (or Saint Eadfrith) (c. 700) The Lindisfarne Gospels is an extremely unique illuminated manuscript gospel book combining styles found in Celtic, Mediterranean and Anglo-Saxon art. This is an example of very early medieval art named Insular art. Lindisfarne is a reference to an island located just off the coast of Northumberland, which earned a reputation after Saint Aidan of Lindisfarne founded a monastery on the island, making the island known to many as the “Holy Island”. -- source link
