The Rise of Sneaker Culture is the first exhibition to explore the complex social history and cultural significance of the footwear now worn by billions of people throughout the world. Since New York City can arguably be considered the birthplace of this global obsession, we’re turning to local sneaker heads to tell us what sneakers mean to them:“My mother is the reason I love sneakers. I remember her going to work wearing these really ill–looking Nikes. Although growing up, I couldn’t afford the pricey kicks, I now own over 60 pairs.” — Calvan Fowler, Owner of Jordan Heads Brooklyn & Director of the Jordan Heads Documentary1. What started it for you? What started it for me was the first Nike Air Max commercial. These dudes were running. The air window collapsing in slow motion & the Beatles song “Revolution” in the background set it off. 2. Why do sneakers belong in a museum? It’s apart of the American fabric. Whether it’s for function or fashion, sneakers have a place in history period.3. What is the future for #sneakerculture? I hope it doesn’t get carried away like hip hop as of late.
