The incredible rock formation is famous for its peculiar jagged peaks and rounded ‘needles’, inspiring its name Montserrat, meaning “serrated mountain” in Catalan. Rising sharply to the west of the Llobregat River, the mountain range is 10km (6.2 miles) long and 5km (3.1 miles) wide. The summit, Sant Jeroni (Saint Jerome) stands at 1,236 metres (4,055 ft) above sea level, closely followed by tall peaks Montgrós and Miranda de les Agulles.
