Marble gravestone of a man and a woman depicted in low relief. Their names are engraved on the architrave above their figures: Philoxenos and Philoumene. Philoxenos, a bearded man in armor, wears an Attic helmet adorned with a tall brush. With his left hand he holds a round shield by a grip that originally would have been painted. He must have fallen in battle since he is represented wearing the helmet and cuirass. He is shaking hands with his wife, both to take leave and to symbolize eternal union. The monument fits both stylistically and iconographically with grave reliefs executed just after the end of the Peloponnesian War in 404 B.C. A renewed appreciation for family life blossomed in the waning years of that disastrous war with Sparta, and funerary reliefs reflect this.4th century B.C., from Attica (Greece)The J.
