This speech ALWAYS brings tears to my eyes … #THIS is how you do vulcans well#distancing yourself from emotions doesn’t mean you can’t deeply care for people #or that you don’t value them and don’t want them to live fulfilling lives #you just have a very different outlook on life #i always find it regrettable when the be-all and end-all of vulcan stories is to accept that emotions are important after all #and the vulcan approach is Wrong and allowing emotions is Right #and I feel like Voyager had a lot of respect for the Vulcan ethos and treated it as valid and even admirable if very alien to humans #which OF COURSE IT IS #that is the point! #anyway #this scene is amazing #star trek voyager #tuvok #ensign wildman #vulcans #vulcan philosophy (via @procrastinatorproject)My feelings about Vulcans perfectly summed up - especially with the context that they actually feel things even more deeply than humans do, and than Surak’s philosophy was literally what saved their entire civilization from violently destroying itself. I really have issues with the typical narrative of ‘oh, they’re not gushing emotions all over the place, this is toxic and repressed.’ Sure some Vulcans have huge issues. Some humans too - humans who do let themselves feel a lot of stuff, and then refuse to talk about it anyway, unlike here where the source of fear is dissected and analyzed, leading to reassurance. If people find value in a philosophy that is not harmful to anyone around them and actively discourages violence, pettiness, deceit, unfairness/injustice and pointless conflict, then why would you deem it wrong?I’ve seen Tuvok be called the most boring Vulcan - because what, he was perfectly healthy, balanced, and he didn’t constantly butt heads with his human Captain and bff? Because he was a good husband, a good officer, an excellent friend, and presumably a good father? What’s boring about being great? -- source link
