classictrek:The first-draft script for “The Naked Time” featured Sulu stalking through the corridors of the Enterprise, brandishing a samurai sword. George Takei went to writer John D.F. Black and told him: “Sulu is a 23rd century guy. I’m a 20th century Asian-American, and I didn’t grow up brandishing a samurai sword. I was swept away by Errol Flynn and The Adventures of Robin Hood. What about putting a fencing foil in Sulu’s hand?”Black’s reaction was that it was a great idea — could Takei fence?Takei, of course, lied and said it was his favorite hobby. “But you never ask an actor whether he can or cannot do anything, because we are experts at everything. And, if we aren’t, that night, we’ll go out and become one,” the actor wrote in his autobiography, To The Stars. -- source link
