peteseeger: On this day, March 24th, 1980, Archbishop Oscar Romero was murdered in church in San Salvador during mass by assassins affiliated with the right-wing capitalist government of El Salvador. Archbishop Romero was a voice for the oppressed and downtrodden poor of El Salvador, willingly placing his life on the line in defense of truth and justice. In his final sermon, Archbishop Romero pleaded with soldiers of the Salvadoran army to lay down their weapons and cease killing their brothers and sisters.Archbishop Romero remains an example and inspiration for all Christians to stand on the side of justice and freedom, even when it places our lives in danger. Archbishop Romero, in his life and martyrdom, represents one of the clearest examples of living a Christlike life in modern history.“The church preaches your liberation just as we have studied it in just as we have studied it in the holy Bible today. It is a liberation that has, above all else, respect for the dignity of the person, hope for humanity’s common good, and the transcendence that looks before all to God and only from God derives its hope and its strength.”…“The violence we preach is not the violence of the sword, the violence of hatred. It is the violence of love, of brotherhood, the violence that wills to beat weapons into sickles for work.“ -- source link
