5epokedex: #069-071 Bellspout, Weepinbell, and VictreebelCarnivorous plants such as venus fly traps, cape sundew, and corkscrew plants are one of the most fascinating aspects of botany, but Bellsprout, Weepinbell, and Victreebel are much more than strange flora. Existing only in the most hostile rainforests and jungles, these monstrous variations on the exotic pitcher plant are frighteningly innocuous and, in their largest state, have humanoid meat on the menu.Walking Weeds. Neither Bellsprout, Weepinbell, nor Victreebel may have legs, but each of them are fully ambulatory. A Bellsprout’s roots, for example, are very dexterous and capable of supporting the Bellsprout’s weight even when unearthed. It’s not uncommon to see Bellsprout uproot themselves and stumble around in search of better pastures. Its more mature forms have less prominent roots and instead use prehensile vines to bound across the forest floor or climb into dense trees and thickets.Predatory Plants. The life of these pitcher plant Pokémon is a long waiting game. They lurk deep in the heart of jungles and sit perfectly still, either rooted into the ground or dangling from the canopy above by a vine. Prey is attracted to these Pokémon by the sickly-sweet scent of their pitchers, which they fan throughout their turf by subtly waving their leaves. This scent puts prey in a stupor where they’re compelled to seek out the source of the aroma. Fine hairs on their leaves and vines mean that these Pokémon can detect minute movements near them, and once prey draws close enough, they coax it into their gaping maw, or simply lunge at it. These Pokémon’s pitchers keep caught prey trapped through a variety of mechanisms. First, the allure of the Pokémon’s sweet scent would obviously be most potent at its epicenter, placating prey to the point where they won’t struggle. Should they manage to shrug off the stupor, they will still find themselves in a steep pit whose walls—made of a smooth membrane with inward-facing hairs—are extraordinarily difficult to climb. Third, and most horrifying, is that the pitcher is full of sticky, highly acidic digestive fluid that begins to digest prey the moment it’s swallowed. Bellsprout, the smallest, attracts mostly insects whereas Weepinbell can draw small animals into itself, but Victreebel, the largest of this Pokémon’s forms, is so large and produces such a potent scent, even humanoids can fall victim to its aroma (which makes it a valuable ingredient in potions). Slain Victreebel occasionally have humanoid remains recovered from their lifeless gullet, and on even more rare occasions, swallowed treasure that could not be digested. -- source link
