route22ny:Grif Teller was the Pennsylvania Railroad’s artist of choice for a long period in which he created dramatic artwork for the PRR’s calendars. In this 1952 oil painting Teller creates an ideal view of the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona. The bodies of water are reservoirs–another engineering marvel (pdf). These days a funicular brings visitors to the area inside the curve (where the small building is) and they can watch freight trains pass much like the scene above. The Horseshoe Curve has a strategic importance; in World War II it was the target of saboteurs from Nazi Germany, part of Operation Pastorius. Fortunately they were caught before they could complete their mission. -- source link
