cbrownjc: anjoulras: This is important; really glad LMM addressed this. IMO, LMM’s reading of Maria’s actions are very sympathetic. Especially given that IRL, Maria sent Hamilton a letter warning him of her husband sending him a letter knowing about their affair 2 days before he got it. Whereas, in the show, Maria explicitly sings “I don’t know about any letter” when Hamilton confronts her about the letter her husband sent him. Also, if anyone hasn’t done so, check out the interview with Ron Chernow and Charlie Rose. They both flat-out call Maria Reynolds a prostitute, and kinda rationalize Hamilton’s actions wrt sleeping with her. LMM, however, puts the blame for the affair squarely on Hamilton. I mean, it kinda just makes me eyeroll when people miss this, given that the song where the affair happens is called “Say No To This” and the ensemble - as the greek chorus - is yelling at Hamilton to say “no.” And he doesn’t. And even sings that he doesn’t say “no.” Like, I don’t even know how some people miss who the majority of the blame for the whole thing is being pointed at. He’s the one shown as the ho in all of this, not Maria. -- source link
