wildlingcorner: Slavic Mythos [XX/?] >> Szczodre Gody/Koliada >> ancient Slavic festival of winter solstice celebrating the victory of light over darkness, bringing hope and happiness to the people. Many festivities were devoted to Weles - god of earth, waters, cattle, the underworld, magic and knowledge. During Szczore Gody bread was shared between families and fortunes were told to predict crops and weather for each month of the upcoming year. Winter solstice time was also devoted to spirits of ancestors. Fires were lit on cemeteries for the ancestors to warm themselves and great feasts were organised. Didukh - first sheaf of wheat of a year, was put in the corner of the room. -- source link
