benafflecks:Come and find me.NO BUT THIS MOVIE IS AMAZINGlike, all the characters are real characters–even with Marissa (Cate Blanchett), who’s pretty single-minded and weirdly vindictive, you get a sense that there are offscreen reasons for why and that there’s history with Hanna’s father, instead of just being that way because We Need an Antagonist. Come to think of it, this movie shares something with Snow White and the Huntsman in that the protagonist and antagonist are both female and a kind of binary of dark and light but centered around similar qualities. (This movie is wayyyy better than SWatH though.) And Hanna is this wonderful combination of intensely competent, savage but without fully understanding the meaning and consequences of her savagery, innocent, trying to explore this new world around her without being at all equipped to do so, intensely loving of her father…she’s just so real and girly and violent all at once. Plus, if you like Hanny Tales, there are definitely fairy tale overtones and yet also fairy tale subtext. If you like monstergirls like Abigail Hobbs, Hanna is sort of a direct counterpoint to her in that she’s both monstrous and vulnerable, but completely without Abigail’s knowingness and manipulativeness, Abigail’s innocent younger sister, almost. It’s just beautiful and complex and one of my favorites that I’ve seen in theaters in the last…I dunno, five years or so? HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. -- source link
