President Obama Gives 1,715 Non-Violent Drug Offenders a Second ChanceSay what you will about President Obama—but he’s done more to give non-violent drug offenders a second chance at life than any other U.S. president.Today, in his last day in office, the president commuted (shortened) the sentences of 330 more people incarcerated in federal prison for drug offenses—bringing his total to 1,715. Of this total, 568 had been sentenced to life in prison, but have now been given a new lease on life.To qualify for a shortened sentence, applicants must have had no history of violence and no significant ties to large-scale criminal organizations.
