blueandnoah:agarthanguide:Well, I finally finished the whole M9 in Art/Pastiche series. I thought you might be interested in seeing the side to side with some of my inspirations. A quick rundown-Caleb- Van GoghBeau- Roy LichtensteinMolly- Byzantine MosaicsJester- KlimtMatt- Hans HolbeinYasha- 15th Century Illuminated Manuscripts/Gerard HorenboutFjord- Adventure Pulp CoversNott- Playing Card DesignCaduceus- MuchaIn case anyone was curious- Caleb was the easiest, Jester was the hardest, I’m most pleased with Matt, I’m least pleased with Nott, and Molly took the longest. Thanks for all your interest! Please feel free to shoot me any questions or comments or suggestions or cheesy jokes anytime you feel like it.[Image description: a set of digital paintings of each of the M9 and Matt Mercer next to the art that inspired each.Caleb is painted as Van Gogh’s iconic self portrait, an impressionist painting of Van Gogh in a pale blue suit. The background is soft swirls of blue and green. Caleb is painted in a style with short and distinct brushstrokes. He looks just below the eyeline of the viewer, frowning slightly. He wears a pale blue coat with wide lapels and a matching shirt and scarf. Frumpkin, an orange tabby, is curled around his neck. Beau is rendered in a style similar to a panel of a comic. She swings her bandaged fist up at the viewer, and the panel says “pow!” in capital letters. Beau’s frowning, her mouth open and hair flying from the force of her movement. She has an undercut and several gold piercings, including eyebrow and cartilage.Molly is painted in a mosaic style inspired by a mosaic of Emperor Justinian in which the emperor is wearing a purple robe and ornate jewelry. The painting of Molly has a background composed of little gold tiles. He’s dressed in a beautiful blue cloak with designs including crescent moons, a sun, and gold and navy geometric designs. The edges of his peacock feather tattoo can be seen on his face, neck, and chest. He has three gold rings around one horn and a long string of pearls dangling from the other. He holds up a sword in one hand. There is a halo behind his head.Jester and The Traveler appear in an adaptation of a Klimt painting of a woman holding her hands up to her chest, surrounded by geometric patterns and simplified eyes. Jester wears a gold dress with long sleeves decorated with eyes. She has a short black bob and is blushing, looking off to the side with a dreamy expression. Behind her, The Traveler rests one elbow on her shoulder. His face is obscured by his cloak, also decorated with eye patterns. His visible wrist is decorated with gold bands and blue eyes. The portrait that inspired Matt’s painting is of a solemn-looking man in a big black robe and flat cap, looking at the viewer with one raised eyebrow. There’s a book beside him. Matt appears in a black cloak with a bright blue lining and blue edging to the sleeves and a brown shirt underneath. The hood is pulled up over his head. He looks at the viewer with one corner of his mouth slightly pulled up and with a slight frown. He’s holding a very large book with bookmarks hanging out of it. The book is attached to a metal cuff around one of his wrists.Yasha’s portrait was inspired by a page from an illustrated manuscript portraying an angel fighting spined sea monsters. The drawing is surrounded by flowers and other creatures. Yasha’s portrait shows her with skeletal wings extended, brandishing her greatsword, with lightning crackling behind her. Underneath, it says “Orphanmaker,” with the O illuminated in blue, red, and gold. The drawing is surrounded by red, white, and blue flowers, and strawberries.Fjord is depicted in a pastiche of a cover of a pulp novel called According to His Lights, across which is emblazoned “Adventure.” An adventurer in khaki and a pith helmet fires a gun as he holds a statuette behind him. A snake curls over the A of Adventure. Fjord holds his falchion across his chest and a glowing golden eye. In front of him is a large temple, the door in the form of a snarling creature, with an intimidating silhouette visible through the door. The title is “Tales of Adventure.” The blurbs say “Included Inside- Chosen of the Wildmother”, “Escape from the temple of the Sea God!”, and “The most exciting ship-wreck story ever told.”Nott is drawn as a playing card, the Queen of Clubs, a melancholy-looking, double-headed woman in an elaborate dress. Upright, with an N in the corner, Nott is a goblin woman holding a crossbow. She’s wrapped in a cloak. Her doll mask is down around her neck. She wears a golden earring. Reversed, with a V in the corner, Veth is a halfling woman. She has her hair in two thick braids falling over her shoulder. She’s wearing two necklaces and the same earring Nott wears.Caduceus’s portrait was inspired by a soft painting of a woman reclining with her chin on her folded hands on some sort of monster with its mouth open. Her voluminous dress spreads out in front of her. There is a circular mosaic behind her head and a flowering bush in front of her. Caduceus is drawn leaning on his wooden staff in a cemetery, several gravestones tilting at angles around him. One of them has red flowers growing up around it. Caduceus wears a peach-coloured top with long, flowing sleeves and loose green pants. He has a cup of tea in one hand and looks contemplative with closed eyes. Behind his head is a circular series of drawings of insects.End description.] -- source link
