I wanna do something else for a sec here. I want to talk about Transformers: The Last Knight. If you’ve been on the internet at all in the last few days, particularly on Youtube, you’ve seen the absolute storm of shit that’s come over the latest Transformers instalment. I wanna chip in. In particular, I wanna express my love for this movie as well as the Transformers franchise in general, and Michael Bay as a director. The odds are good that many of you are questioning my sanity at this moment. Many of you may already have questioned my sanity when I recommended Transformers in the latest Staff Picks post on Affect3D. People who know me personally know that I always express my appreciation for Bay, and even here on my porn blog with my porn producing alias I am apparently taking the time to do it again. What does any of this have to do with porn?Because Transformers is porn.I would argue that Transformers can be good in much the same that way porn can be good. You adjust your expectations going in. You’re not expecting anything other than gratification. Transformers is CGI porn, explosion porn, car porn, pretty girl porn, you name it. These movies are endless sequences of pointless but evocative shots that are designed to push buttons and evoke primal responses. Responses that we’re apparently either ashamed or afraid to admit to. If you can look at a shot like the knights of the round table being joined in their salute by ancient robot protectors, and somehow not grin, your inner child is dead.Next point. Transformers movies have CGI like no others. I have never suffered suspension of disbelief due to an effect in these movies, which isn’t often the case with CGI in movies because I scrutinise the fuck out of it. Being a 3D artist myself, I can also appreciate the time and effort, and the countless hours upon days upon weeks of rendering that go into a production like this. Just the sheer expertise required in making these animations work, I can’t even begin to express how impressive I think that is.The same goes for the soundtrack composer, Steve Jablonsky. Particularly with The Last Knight, he outdid himself. Amazing music every single time. Then there’s the characters themselves. People keep calling Cogman a C3PO rip-off. Why? C3PO is a slow, inept, and perpetually confused shuffler who can’t do much of anything. Without R2D2, C3PO would’ve never made it off the Lars moisture farm. Cogman is not only highly competent, he’s also hyperactive, and hypereffective. How does this character have anything to do with C3PO?Wahlberg was Wahlberg, Hopkins was hilarious, and the little girl was actually really well done. Completely unnecessary to the plot, but the actress took her on and owned her. Good performance.I dunno, there’s a whole buncha other stuff I could say about this movie that I liked. The end battle was great. Bumblebee taking on Optimus was great. Megatron was better than he’s ever been, hence the picture I chose. But overall, why do I even need to apologise for these movies? In almost all respects save scriptwriting, the Transformers franchise is a masterpiece. But since there’s no shortage of neckbeards on the internet hating on it, I feel compelled to do the opposite. The Last Knight gets an 8/10 from me. And I’m going to see #6 and love it even if it’s just to spite all the fun-hating shits. -- source link
