adhdsaysquirrel:elvenking: I bet they don’t mention his fireworks. There should be a verse about them. Why does this line matter so much? BECAUSE. LET ME FUCK UP YOUR DAY. The world is far bigger than hobbits. The fact that hobbits come to matter at all is a great curiosity to anyone who comes across them because they are simple farmer folk not given to great deeds and who take pleasure in simple not great things (compared to the deeds of elves and men let’s say). Gandalf is routinely mocked by his peers (some do it lovingly and some not so much) for his interest in these simple unimportant creatures. Obviously there is much to be said and much has been said about how hobbits are actually very resilient and they are movers and shakers etc. However THAT IS NOT MY ARGUMENT. NO. Yes hobbits can do great things. Yes they are soft on the outside iron on the inside. But when it comes down to it hobbits really don’t want all of that. They want a quiet home, things to eat and drink, friends, and pipe-weed. Just because one can fight and change the world doesn’t mean one should put that as the things of greatest value. The idea that in a world of magic and war a steady warm happy family can be the best thing is so rare Gandalf chooses to value it above many other great things. And the fact that these creatures who are wary of Gandalf but grow to love him and more fully understand his place in the great world choose to still remember him for his simple and warm nature speaks volumes to the kind of world they hope to have. Sam knows Gandalf is great and magical but he makes sure that at his (supposed) death everyone remembers this soft warm small thing that Gandalf values every bit as much as his role in successions and wars and rings and dragons. Gandalf deserved to be remembered for many things but at his death he deserved the small mention of his warm happy place amongst simple folks with fireworks. Gandalf loved being a simple old man with silly fireworks. He adored hobbit children. He loved being a pester and a bother. He loved his role in their lives as much as anything else. I’m going to cry over Samwise Gamgee being the best of everything good in this world again. Kaythanksbye -- source link
