1870 proposal for a Nicaragua Canal, a rival location for what became the Panama Canal in 1914. The Panama site was eventually chosen because it was shorter, although the jungles and mountains that the Panama canal would cross are some of the most treacherous in the world and would claim thousands of workers’ lives. There is currently a new effort, funded by investment from China, to build a new Nicaraguan Canal. -- source link
