Great Market Hall BudapestThe Great Market Hall in Budapest is something you cannot miss, it is the center of local life in a city, the markets. Hungarian Cuisine is full of ingredients and spices that you cannot leave the country without seeing them. The Great Market Hall or Central Market Hall is the largest and oldest indoor market in Budapest. The building- designed and built by Samu Pecz around 1897 – is lovely on the outside. The entrance gate has a neo-gothic touch. A distinctive architectural feature is the roof which was covered with colourful Zsolnay tiles, just as Matthias church and many other buildings in Budapest. The area size of the building is 10,000 square meters, which is covered by steel structure. During the World War II it was completely damaged and then closed for some years. Throughout the 1990’s restoration works the Great Market Hall of Budapest got back its original splendour. The building was awarded with FIABCI Prix d’Excellence in 1999.On the ground floor there are the local shops with fruit and veggies, spices and also bakeries. Most of the stalls here offer meats, pastries, sausages, candies, eggs, mushroom, gooseliver and spirits such as Tokaj wine and pálinka, but you find paprika and Turó Rudi – a kind of chocolate bar Hungary famous for – and caviar too. The second floor has mainly eateries offering traditional Hungarian delicacies as stuffed cabbage, lángos, strudel, goulash and more, and souvenirshops. The basement contains butcher shops, fish market, and pickles. Not only do they have traditional cucumber pickles, but they also offer pickled cauliflower, cabbage, beets, tomatoes, and garlic alike.During weekdays you find also some locals, who offer the products – mainly fruits and vegetables – from their own garden.
