ottomanladies:Nefise Melek Hatun, Melek Hatun or Melek Sultan Hatun was the only daughter of Murad Hüdavendigar and the first Ottoman princess to leave her mark in history. The confusion over her name derives from the custom of Anatolian principalities to refer to noblewomen with honorary titles instead of their birth names. Between 1378 and 1381, Nefise Melek married the son of Karamanoğlu Halil Bey, Alaeddin Ali Bey. The marriage, though, did not stop the Ottoman-Karaman conflict, to the point that Nefise Melek had to act as mediator between her husband and her father: Murad I, moved by the sight of his daughter entering his tent followed by her children, decided to forgive Alaeddin Ali under the condition that he kiss the hem of his skirts, which he did. Nefise Melek Hatun’s role as diplomat did not stop, as in vain she tried to save her husband from her brother Bayezid I’s wrath in 1397. Alaeddin Bey met him at the battle of Akçay and was killed. Afterwards, the sultan ordered his sister and her children to move to Bursa. After Bayezid I’s defeat against Timur in 1402, Nefise Melek returned to Karaman, where she died. // Gulsim Ali as Nefise Hatunsources: M.
