Plankton spiral off AustraliaA large eddy swirling through the southeastern Indian Ocean is revealed by the shape of this plankton bloom enjoying the warmth of the southern summer. The nutrients to feed the organisms were probably dredged up from the deep by the currents that produce the eddies, since it is too far away from land to be fertilised by runoff.
