uwmspeccoll:Decorative Plates from Haus eines KunstfreundesToday we present decorative plates from Hauseines Kunstfreundes bythe Scottish architect Charles RennieMackintosh, who worked on the project with his wife MargaretMacdonald. The designs were created for the competition “House for an Art Lover,” organizedin 1901 by AlexanderKoch, publisher of the German design magazine Zeitschrift für Innendekoration. Mackintosh’s design portfoliowas disqualified because of late entry, but the judges were impressed with the originalityand modern spirit of the work. Alexander Koch published Mackintosh’s portfolioin 1902, and each of the 14 plates were framed and exhibited by Koch at the InternationalExhibition of Decorative Art at Turin. The plates we are featuring todayare from a full-size facsimile published in 1991 by the Fraser Press in Glasgowin an edition of 1000 copies. It includes the original preface by Hermann Muthesiusand a new introduction by RogerBillcliffe. The 14 large format plates were reproduced in up to six colors, including silver and gold, which are enclosed in a portfolio secured with ribbons identical in style to the original. Our copy is a generous donationfrom our friend, Jerry Buff. Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s House foran Art Lover was eventually built some 90 years after it was originallydesigned. A team of architects, designers, builders and craftsmen worked tomake Mackintosh’s conceptual designs into a real house, which opened to thepublic in Glasgow in 1996.View more posts about decorativearts and pattern books.–Sarah, Special Collections Graduate Intern -- source link
