Gon is trying to keep Killua and himself distracted so they don’t get down too much by rambling a bit (though, of course, the side-stepping will almost certainly play into how they actually do escape) and trying to cheer Killua up. Along with just brainstorming things that might actually help. For Killua this has stopped being about escape and become about proving he is a good person, and more than that about above all else saving Gon. He’s devaluing himself, perhaps idolizing Gon a bit, and not convinced he’s anything other than a selfish self-interested programmed killer. And what would prove that’s not true, what would redeem him more, than his willingly dying for someone else’s safety? Especially worthwhile as that person is Gon, arguably to Killua the Best Person In The World? His brother’s in his head saying he’s been trained to never take on fights he can’t win, to assess people as “kill” or “don’t kill”. That he’s incapable of friendship or bravery or goodness based on those qualities. But if he took on a fight he knew he’d lose for someone he never wanted to kill, wouldn’t that finally show he’s a real person? -- source link
