China - Hupeh (Hubei) Provincial Bank 10 cents of 1928. This note depicts the ‘original’ Yellow Crane Tower. The Yellow Crane Tower was originally constructed in around 223 AD as the watchtower of the castle of Huang Wu, ruler of the state of Wu. Since then the structure has been destroyed and rebuilt on numerous occasions due to accidental fire and frequent warfare. During the 17th to 19th centuries alone, the tower had to be rebuilt seven times, probably making it one of the most disaster prone monuments anywhere on Earth let alone China. The one depicted here burnt down in 1884 yet it was still such a famous landmark of the region that they chose to depict it despite the tower no longer standing. -- source link
