In the Zatanna arc in Young Justice: Phantoms, we are introduced to the show’s version of Mary Batson, a young woman in her early twenties by this point, in her first on-screen appearance in the show. She was previously meant to appear in the superhero Rocket’s bridal show back in season two, but there wasn’t enough time for them to design her character model. However, by the time the show was renewed for seasons three and four, DC lost the rights to calling Captain Marvel anything but Shazam, which means that Billy is in the awkward position where he can’t actually say what his new in-universe superhero name is (neither can Mary), while Mary is now unable to say her own superhero name in the YJ universe, Sgt. Marvel, due to the whole lapsed copyright thing. This is possibly the meta reason why Mary in her appearance in the show is learning to be a practical magician under her own name, rather than operating as a superhero, like she did as a kid. The reason why she stopped being a hero haven’t been elaborated on, as yet, with Mary in her debut episode implying that it was due to her being given too much power at too young an age (which, hrrm, hoping it’s not going to be a Countdown to Infinite Crisis situation). Maybe it’ll get fleshed out further and maybe tie into why Billy goes by Shazam now as well, but we shall see.Oh yeah, additionally, this version of Mary isn’t actually Billy’s sister, bio or otherwise, instead being a school friend of his, along with Freddie Freeman and Kit Freeman (the superhero Kit Eternity, who is somewhat Shazam-ish now that I think about it, what with his powers being his being able to summon any historical figure to aid him as compensation for dying before he was expected to). -- source link
