Egypt is the oldest continuously documented civilization on the African continent, and our collection, begun in 1902, tells the story of its art from its earliest known origins until the Roman period. The galleries for this unparalleled collection have been reorganized and reinstalled to help tell this story. The original African inhabitants who created Egyptian culture about 4500 b.c.e. were joined over the following five thousand years by other Africans from Nubia and Libya, as well as by Semites, Persians, Greeks, and Romans. Alexander the Great conquered Egypt in 332 BCE. The Romans conquered Egypt in 31 BCE. Following each conquest, Greeks and Romans came to live in Egypt and adopted Egyptian traditions and religion. But they also continued to make art in the style of their original culture and added such works to typically Egyptian mummies, much like this Portrait of a Young Person from 200-230 C.E.Visit our reorganized and refreshed Ancient Egyptian Art galleries to take in over 4,000 years of astonishing objects from this ancient multicultural society. -- source link
