Chesterton, St. Augustine, St. Thomas More and so many Catholic converts is that basically: Other founders of religion taught doctrines where Christ primarily claimed to be somebody. He claimed to be ‘The Way, The Truth and The Life". As Lewis puts it, ‘He taught as if he was God. He claimed to forgive sins. He said he had always existed. He said he was coming to judge the world at the end of time.’The one thing you cannot say about this person is that he was a good man because good men do not make claims of that kind. Sound, solid ethical teachers do not talk in that way. There’s only three reactions: ’bad’, ’mad’ or ’God’ is the usual way of putting it. But can anyone really believe that the Sermon on the Mount was the discourse of a madman? Of course not. The parable of the Prodigal Son is sometimes said to be the greatest short story ever recounted.
