“The old cosmopolitan city that I remember from childhood, and recognize in stories told to me
“The old cosmopolitan city that I remember from childhood, and recognize in stories told to me by my family, was composed of people from many places— many centuries of pilgrims who chose to stay and mingle with the inhabitants, making their home here. These include the Burmese refugees who have settled in the Burmawi district pictured here. This old city is giving way to a new global city populated by immigrant labor, pilgrims, tourists, and Muslim businessmen. The symbolic city is replacing the real city.” —Ahmed MaterAhmed Mater (Saudi, born 1979). Foundation for the New Tower, 2015. C‐print, 48 x 72 in. (122 x 182.9 cm).
