7-percent:Five Fics SaturdayWell, I was busy on Good Friday, so here are five fics I’ve been reading at the moment, all of which I recommend. A Conditional Pardon by LondonLioness (Words: 49,014 Chapters: 30/30, T, Comments: 264 Kudos: 183 Bookmarks: 41 Hits: 3173) Sherlock stared nervously at the envelope in his brother’s hand. “Is that my pardon?” Mycroft pursed his lips. “It’s more the procedure you have to go through to earn your pardon. There are conditions.” “And I’m not going to like them,” the younger brother deduced. He paled suddenly. “Not the mission?” “No,” Mycroft pronounced firmly. “No mission, no gaol.” “Well, so far I love it,” Sherlock snarked. “What’s the catch?” The elder Holmes visibly braced himself. “Psychiatric treatment.” Of course, in between therapy sessions, Sherlock will have to quite literally save the world.LondonLioness is a new author for me and this is a great introduction to their writing. Described as a sandwich of sick fic surrounding a casefic filling, it’s very tasty indeed. These Old Shades by sgam76(Words: 118,786 Chapters: 39/? , T. Comments: 820 Kudos: 216 Bookmarks: 31 Hits: 9181) Memory has always been Sherlock’s best tool–his weapon of choice, in fact. But there have been times in his life when his memory is also his worst enemy. Right now is one of those times.Be aware that this is a work in progress! A story within a story (as you might expect from the author of the Scheherazade universe), the flashback section takes up the majority if the chapters so far; expect an interesting collision of young Sherlock as musician with a reason to regret this particular ghost of his past. I can’t wait for the next chapter!Repairing the Broken Things by BakerTumblings(Words: 75,273 Chapters: 15/15, M, Collections: 1 Comments: 477 Kudos: 923 Bookmarks: 247 Hits: 19235) “I’m calling today to notify you that there’s been an accident.”I have no idea why I didn’t read this or anything else by BakerTumblings when it first came out years ago. If you aren’t one of the nearly 20,000 readers who saw this the first time around, do get onto this bandwagon ASAP. This is one of the most powerfully REALISTIC sickfics I’ve read. Expect serious John whump with a happy ending. The Ancillus’s Tale by Chryse(Words: 62,693 Chapters: 11/? Comments: 559, E, Kudos: 266 Bookmarks: 57 Hits: 5174) Once Sherlock’s body had been his alone. He was free to treat it with great care or none at all; to live on cigarettes and coffee and cocaine and then sleep it all off for days on end. He was free to stay in and sleep alone or to go to clubs and choose someone to touch him, mark him with nails and teeth or to kiss him with sweetness and care, according to his whim. Every part of it had been his decision. No more. Now he was property of the Crown, tagged and marked like one of the King’s deer, to be bred like one of his horses.Anyone who isn’t reading this WIP needs their head examined IMHO. I am not familiar with the Handmaid’s Tale (not the book, not the TV series) but the story so well integrates that into the omega’verse concept that it is riveting stuff. Chryse is one of the legends of this fandom, so I squeed with delight to be notified of a new story after a long hiatus. Captivating creativity!hired gun by simplyclockwork(Words: 193,981 Chapters: 33/40,E, Comments: 1496 Kudos: 432 Bookmarks: 98 Hits: 13869) After faking his suicide in response to allegations of fraud, two years into dismantling Moriarty’s network finds Sherlock Holmes in Morocco. Nearing the end of his mission, he is apprehended by a man with the mercy of a doctor, the control of a soldier, and the brutality of a mercenary. Through capture, betrayal, and unexpected danger, both Sherlock and John Watson, gun-for-hire, will have to learn who can really be trusted.I put this one as “marked for later” when it was first published; now that it’s at 33 of 40 chapters, I felt able to dive in. I do binge read and it can mean that I end up gagging for the rest of the story when I hit the brick wall, waiting for the next chapter. This story is creative, original in concept, executed so well in a North African context that is brought to life. Expect seriously BAMF John Watson and a testy, tetchy early relationship where these two men slowly come to realise that working together is better than being alone. -- source link
