historiandaily:“The sound of the Gion Shōja bells echoes the impermanence of all things; the color of the sāla flowers reveals the truth that the prosperous must decline. The proud do not endure, they are like a dream on a spring night; the mighty fall at last, they are as dust before the wind.” -The Tale of the HeikeJune 23, 1180- The Genpei War, years in the making, begins at the First Battle of Uji. The Genpei War was the culmination of the rivalry between the Minamoto clan and the Taira clan, both descendant clans of the Imperial family. They each had fought each other for control of the Imperial court, and Japan, for decades. When the Taira clan attempted to move the capital from Kyoto to Fukuhara, the Minamoto put forth a call to arms. Prince Mochihito, the Minamoto-backed claimant to the throne, was then chased from Kyoto by Taira forces. Minamoto soldiers moved to protect the prince, but were killed, their commander committing seppuku. Prince Mochihito was captured and killed soon after. After five years of fighting, the Minamoto would emerge victorious and create the Kamakura Shogunate.Picture- The Genpei War -- source link
