They are wearing Capirotes. Its not a bunch of KKK members. From Wikipedia:“A capirote is a pointed hat of conical form that is used in Spain. It is part of the uniform of some brotherhoods including the Nazarenos and “Phariseos” during Easter observances and reenactments in some areas during Holy Week in Spain. The pointed hat was worn by clowns and jugglers who wanted to portray clumsiness or stupidity during medieval times. Because of this, pointed hats were used when vexing criminals. The criminals were forced to wear pointed hats and walk through the streets, while people threw rotten vegetables at them, spat on them, and insulted them.Later, during the celebration of the Holy Week/Easter in Mediterranean countries, “Penitentes” (people doing penance for their sins) would walk through streets with pointed hats. It was a way of self-injury; however, they covered their faces so they wouldn’t be recognized. The capirote, which predates such hoods, is not to be confused with the pointed hoods worn by members of the Ku Klux Klan.”I honestly didn’t know this.So ironic that the Anti-Catholic KKK stole these looks….I remember seeing pictures of these guys in Spanish religious art in art history classes, they’re just as spooky in real life as in paint:A holdover from the time when religion, in addition to offering salvation, also was used to scare the living bejeesus out of people. Here’s a painting by Goya showing capriotes being worn, for bonus:Yes I remember being scared by them when I was a tiny one. Depending on the region of Spain (the use of capirotes and hoods is pretty extended in the entire country, not only in the Mediterranean coast) they also offer sweets and candies; there are even candies and chocolates shaped after them. So one of my childhood memories about the Holy Week includes being terrible scared at a guy dressed with one of these outfits. He had to lift his veil to calm me. “That isn’t any Catholicism I have ever seen, those outfits sure as fuck aren’t Roman Catholic approved.” Imagine knowing so little and trying to present yourself as any kind of expert So what I’m getting from this is “The Klansmen dress up in clown costumes,”“That isn’t any Catholicism I have ever seen, those outfits sure as fuck aren’t Roman Catholic approved.” Dude you’re telling me that one of the most Catholic countries in probably history is not Roman Catholic approved? We had Kings called the CATHOLIC king and queen, cause they expelled Muslims and Jewish from here and also take Christianity to the American people (I’M NOT GOING TO TALK ABOUT HOW BAD WHERE THOSE THINGS I KNOW THEY WERE. THAT’S NOT THE POINT I’M TRYING TO MAKE) we started and ended wars against pretty much every religion to defend Christianity; we had a Spanish pope, yeah the Borgia were a Spanish family, Charles V the emperor of the German empire who had quite the fight with the Lutheran Church was the grandson of the Catholic Kings, our queen is one of the few women who doesn’t need to wear black and cover her head in presence of the Pope, which is a great deal.It saddens me to no end when an uncultured dummy sees that and screams KKK at the top of their lungs, cause even if I don’t believe in God and religion, it keeps being an important part of my identity as a Spanish woman. Stealing symbols is something old, Hitler did it: he took the Swastika from Asian culture, or the old imperial eagle (remember Charles V I mentioned before? yeah his personal logo had that imperial eagle)Franco, the Spanish dictator from that time, did the same too, he got the eagle back into Spain’s flag, the imperial eagle. The KKK is not being original by stealing that clothing. They just want to steal the anonymous part of it. the part that scares kids and hides your faces.Poor Penitentes don’t deserve to be comparated with those assholes when all they’re doing is wanting to repent from their sinsI would point out that the KKK didn’t start by wearing those hats at their inception, that only came after the movie Birth of Nation when the second KKK was founded. The Original KKK was basically a loosely connected bunch of former Confederates with varying goals, some acting as vigilante police, others going after political opponents, others going trying to affect politics through fear, many launching guerilla wars against the North, etc, that had worn basically just masks and occasional robes, and mostly just been a brief mess of violence in an unstable South before it stabilized enough that it just died out. The film Birth of a Nation romanticized the organization and created the iconic look and political platforms we see today, as well as shaping its organizational structure. So the Movie ripped off the Catholic Church and Medieval Knights (While being anti-Catholic) and then the members started dressing up like the people in the movie….. Which in a way makes them a bunch of racist Cosplayers. And this is why you don’t view everything through an Americo-centric lens, you totally miss out on history and other cultures’ practices, or you end up making them about your history when they aren’t.Sorry but as a black American seeing this would very much so alarm me and in that moment I would not want to ask any questions about it’s history. I would be petrified. And I wouldn’t feel bad for “Americanizing” it. That’s interesting information to know tho. Also idk if y’all just forgot or something but Spain and religion are literally two of the largest influences in slavery. So it’s most definitely not just an American history issue. Spain was literally one of the first to start slavery and one of the last places to actually abolish it because they were very much so like Americans too.Okay so Spain is based. Noted. -- source link
