The Lee Enfield Cavalry Carbine,Around the turn of the century there was a call to create a shortened lighter carbine version of the Lee Enfield Mark I for use by the British Army’s mounted soldiers. The Lee Enfield Cavalry Carbine was a result of this need. With production beginning around 1896, the carbine was a shortened version of the Lee Enfield Mark I, with a shorter barrel, a more cavalry friendly stock, and rounded edges to prevent snagging. The most noticeable difference between the carbine and its larger brother was its smaller magazine, shortenend to six rounds instead of the standard ten. The purpose of this was so that the carbine could fit in a saddle holster and be drawn without snagging.The Lee Enfield Calvary Carbine saw some action, mostly in the Boer Wars (1899-1902). Production slowed and ceased after the turn of the 19th century, mostly due to the obselecense of cavalry forces in warfare. About 1,500 were produced. Many would be issued to the Royal Irish Constabulary after being decommisioned. -- source link
