felixdeon:Le Monocle Club was a lesbian club in Montmartre in Paris, which was a successful bar in the 1920’s and 1930’s. This painting is inspired by Le Monocle Club, and the photos were taken there, several by the great photographer Brassaï. The club owner, who is the only one who appears by themself (in the fourth photo), also appears as a bartender in some of the subsequent photos. The club was ultimately shut down by the Nazis during the German occupation of Paris, as a reprisal against queer lifestyles. The club was named after the early 20th century lesbian fashion for wearing monnocles, which acted as an advertisement of one’s queer sexuality. You can find this painting as a print in my etsy shop.
