useless-catalanfacts:Yesterday’s (04.11.2017) march in Perpinyà, Northern Catalonia (land occupied by France since 1659). Northern Catalonia’s national day commemorates the day when the Treaty of the Pyrenees was signed, November 7th, 1659. This treaty, signed by France and Castile (Spain), gave Northern Catalonia to France, separating it from the rest of Catalonia. After this, the French state applied the same shameful policies of cultral and linguistic repression to Northern Catalonia as they did to the rest of nations under French rule.As you can see in the image above, the motto of the protest is “esborrem el Tractat dels Pirineus”, which in Catalan means “let’s erase the Treaty of the Pyrenees”. Yesterday’s 3,000 protesters also chanted asking freedom for the Catalan political prinoers in Spanish jails, condemning Spain’s authoritarian rule, in favour of the decaration of the Catalan Republic, and their Catalan identity.Source -- source link
