Fort Washington, Maryland Seen From Across the Potomac River on the Mount Vernon Bicycle Trail, Fairfax County, ole Virginny, 2011.One (and the better preserved) of two fortresses guarding the river approach to Washington, DC. Originally constructed in 1809, the star shaped battlements along with the similar Fort Hunt on the ole Virginny side of the river proved less than satisfactory in keeping British troops from Washington in the War of 1812. Ft. Washington was abandoned by the military in 1939. It is now a National Historical Park and one I should visit again sometime soon as I think my last visit was about 40 years ago. -- source link
