During the 18th and 19th centuries, in the midst of westward expansion by the United States government, Native American tribes and the United States Army clashed in fierce battles as tribes fought to keep their ancestral lands. Drawings like these were made on ledger books by the Cheyenne and other Plains tribes to document their battle experiences. As more and more tribes were forced onto reservations by the U.S. Government, art traditions that were originally created on shirts and tipi liners were replaced by drawings done on ledger books.
