It feels like he is good offering safety and comfort. The act of seeing him touching a destroyed woman…and then you remember “you did this to her daughter….” Its pure terror.but this is what he does.Dr. Lecter has made an art form out of playing cat-and-mouse, even though he almost never reveals to his victims that they are, in fact, his victims— they usually find out from someone else much later (see: his dinner guests in Red Dragon). It’s not about the big revelation and watching their fear and anger spike as they realize what he’s done and what he might yet do. It’s about appropriating gestures usually associated with warmth and humanity (having people in his home and feeding them, comforting a grieving mother, giving a first edition Dantean sonnet to the wife of a man he plans to kill, falling asleep holding the hand of the teenage girl whose near-fatal injury he caused by tipping her father off to the fact that he was backed into a corner) and twisting them into something pitch-black and unrecognizable. When he takes that woman into his arms, when she lets him do it, you can bet he feels like the god he described to Will— comforting with one hand and pushing the knife in deeper with the other.He has all the power because they don’t even know they’re playing a game, and he cultivates their emotions using those gestures of kindness and drinks in their gratitude or their pain, delighting in the fact that he’s the only one who knows that he is their predator, not their friend.Hannibal.spoilers.and you know the best part.well it sort of depends on your view of God and Lucifer but for the sake of analysis let’s just approach them as constructs.Dr. Lecter isn’t playing God.he’s playing Lucifer playing God.he’s creeping under their skin; feeding them ideas that sound so reasonable.‘God does bad things to bad people; does he really deserve your adoration?’.and then using the ensuing doubt to knock them off-balance; breaking open their heads and pilfering through the exposed brains.and even as he preys on them.he smiles and soothes them with that rich gentle voice and offers them comfort in the wake of the very distress he caused.‘ain’t nobody gonna love you like the devil do’ indeed.Perfection. You know what is more amazing? He is not only manipulating the people in his universe. He manipulates the audience. Because many buy into the “I only eat the rude” philosophy and even the ones really aware of what he truly is feel a little attracted to that. We feel attracted to his vision of the world because it sounds logic and true.He offers reason and savage beauty to us as audience and we feel dragged to it in the same way that Will listen to his voice because it sound less mess that hearing to his own thoughts and values that contradict his senses. Hannibal is completly calm and ok with that so why not us? Thats what he sells. Its better to run into his arms that the moral REAL and RIGHT choice to question him and accept that he is a monster, because questioning becomes more difficult both for us and for Will.And that so scary. He is not only playing Will about his own mind, he is also playing us about Will’s mind to the point that we are also doubting Will and some of us even believing that Will is a potential monster. BECAUSE HANNIBAL PLANTED THAT IDEA ON HIM AND US BOTH. He is that great at manipulation, because he totally believes his own delusion and he actually believes that he “loves” Will. A horrifying version of love. Just like the devil.PS: I was going to write about how Hannibal is not a relyable voice to here when he speaks about EVERYTHING but mostly when he explains things to WilL about his own emotions. Becuase THIS. He is playing a game. He is not saying nothing about Will that is “true” more than he is planting his own distorted versions of Will and because Will is sooo terrible baaad at self awareness sometimes that he can be easily manipulated by experts manipulators like Hannibal.#can i just #role all around in this meta #but yes yes YES #because hannibal is NOT a reliable narrator #he is not SANE #but he is very very good at convincing people (maybe even himself) that he is #he is a master manipulator #and he manipulates the audience just as much as his victims -- source link
