There’s usually something going on in town if you can change out of your pajamas and pull yourself away from Netflix. “Furosatto” is a group of shops and restaurants just behind the Jōetsu Myoko Station all housed in remodeled freight containers. Last weekend there was a small festival there featuring a “Toki” character, a bird once nearly extinct and now making a comeback on the neighboring island of Sado. I also ran into some friends selling bakery goods, fried chicken and beer.
