underthehedge:getreadystartnow:neat piece of information I found in a book about traditional skillsWhile this is cool and all, you need the right kind of cricket, namely a “snowy tree cricket” (Oecanthus fultoni). Other crickets are less reliable and, uh, this is starting to sound like a shitpost but it’s real. Here’s a link to a page with a picture of one, a recording of the song and some other cool facts about them including where you’re actually likely to find one (i.e. large parts of the US and a tiny corner of BC, Canada). I’ve known about the thermometer thing and the species for years but until today I’d never looked up a picture of one and didn’t know that they’re beautiful.For Fahrenheit I’m seeing 13, 14 and 15 seconds all quoted as the length of time to count for. You can also use them to find out the temperature in sensible units Centigrade, at least in the 5-30°C range, by counting chirps for 8 seconds and adding 5. -- source link
