So is the alternative to let them out so they can kill people againNo, this is talking about Solitary Confinment not normal prison. the “Super Max” We try to claim that Prisons are both holding places and rehabilitation, but people who go into solitary never come out “better”Solitary Confinement was considered so bad that it was /banned/ by essentially everyone during the days of kingsIt is inherently against basic human decency. Because Solitary isn’t just used for Super Max prisons, for mass murderers or serial killers.It’s used in almost every prison in the nation, including relatively low risk prisons where most of the offenders are drug and theft offenders. If we’re trying to rehabilitate people it’ll never happen in solitary. People who go in there (And it easy to be put in there, guards are looking for an excuse not to have to deal with you), are more likely to commit /worse/ crimes when they are released for their minor crimes.We are creating mentaly disturbed people in our PRison Complex. Because Solitary Confinement isn’t just being alone, it’s sensory deprivation, we give it a nicer name to distance what we’re doing to people, sometimes people no older than 18. It’s Sensory Deprivation, FOR DAYS, MONTHS At a time. Imagine never seeing, hearing, touching, smelling another human being for days. Imagine having nothing to occupy your mind for days, imagine a small room with no sensation for days.Solitary is barbaric. You’d be better off putting the men to death than putting them in that hell box. This practice was banned by religious Zealots, and Kings, it was considered more inhuman than Drawing and Quartering someone and yet here we are in 2016 and Solitary is back to stay as if it means nothing that our less advanced selves thought the practice was too horrible even for their worst enemies.These people are still citizens, and they are still human there is no excuse for this. -- source link
