swforester:Scenes from Quabbin Park cemetery. This cemetery was created in 1932 because of the construction of Quabbin Reservoir. Not only did every building in all the towns that would be flooded have to be taken apart and shipped out or burned(along with all the forests) but every graveyard in the valleys-there were about 34-had to be disinterred and moved to a new location. In all 7613 graves and bodies were moved, most to Quabbin Park cemetery, though some families elected to have their loved ones moved elsewhere. It is also interesting to note that the stone gate is built from stones taken from all the churches in the valley. The historic photo is taken from the mass gov site for Quabbin Park Cemetery.February 25th, 2017 -- source link
