On October 3, 1994, twenty-two years ago today, as the seventy-fifth anniversary celebrations of the Save The Children charity got underway in London, members of London’s Lesbian Avengers disrupted a meeting that Princess Anne was set to attend, sparking a sustained protest both in and outside the festivities. The controversy stemmed from the charity’s decision to drop comedian Sandi Toksvig as host of the celebrations after Toksvig revealed that she was raising three children with her partner, Petaline Stewart. As Toksvig later explained, “four days before I was to host their massive conference in the Albert Hall, they phoned me up and they fired me - because they didn’t want Princess Anne to meet a lesbian. Now, I’m going to guess, having been involved in the equine world, that she probably met one before.” In a statement at the time, the charity claimed Toksvig’s appearance “might distract from the events of the day.” After weeks of protests by LGBTQ activists, starting with the Lesbian Avengers, Save The Children issued an unreserved apology, saying the decision had been wrong and counter to its policy of anti-discrimination. #lgbthistory #lgbtherstory #lgbttheirstory #lgbtpride #QueerHistoryMatters #HavePrideInHistory #LesbianAvengers #SandiToksvig (at London, United Kingdom) -- source link
