I think he means to blame Spain for valuing explorers more than building cathedrals, therefore the fact that Spanish is a major language now is only accidental because Italian could’ve taken its place if things had gone differently It still wouldn’t excuse the fact that he basically made it into a positive—considering Spanish was -almost never transmitted in a non-ethnocidesque manner, at least until recent and even then that’s up for debate, and it’s not as if those explorers were simply looking for adventure and discovery. You can’t justify colonialism especially when it comes to the Spanish empire in the Americas. Whether it was Italy or Spain it doesn’t change the reality of the situation in its proper context.Mirko, he didn’t present it as a neutral observation, he presented it as though it were a *positive* thing. He is *praising* Spain for killing people and destroying cultures and acting as if it’s some sort of failure that Italy didn’t. This is against the church. He’s saying “yall were more concerned about building temples to your god. That’s why youre where youre at now. Also facts is facts is facts. Yall so damn trigger happy. I feel like I need to scrub down this whole post with bleach so that I don’t catch whatever atheist brain worms make people think that what the Spanish Empire did in Central and South America was in any way praiseworthy. To say nothing of the fact that Spanish colonialism was itself informed by religious zeal with the backing of the church, so really not one facet of this holds any water. This doesn’t come across as a condemnation of temple-building at all, it in fact comes across as though it were some sort of bizarre missive in support of the Temple-Builders’ Union. Like the only reason you would compare these to countries is to minimize violent imperialism and colonialism as just white people being curious^ Yes. I don’t know how people are reading it in any other way, espesh considering the way Neil talked about Spain “valuing explorers.”The conquistadores didn’t explore diddly shit. -- source link
