The Battle of Stamford Bridge (1066 AD) Invading Norwegian forces led by Harald Hardrada (wielding the axe) were beaten by Harold Godwinson’s army. A bit of Pyrrhic victory perhaps, since king Harold himself was defeated a couple of weeks later at Hastings.
