Thomas was the son of a poor farmer and loved Agnes, daughter of a squire across the River in Glaisdale. Thomas was rejected as a suitor and denounced as a beggar by the squire. So he decided to go to sea to seek his fortune, he was prevented from saying good-bye to Agnes by floods making the river impassable.
