petermorwood: zhuanghongru: Handmade embroidery on European men’s clothing in the 18th century Blink, blink. Or maybe that should be bling, bling… And when you’re done admiring it and being amazed by it, spare a thought for the fingers and the eyesight of the women (mostly women, but often men) who embroidered it. Embroidery of this quality commanded good payments; if a high-ranked lord or noted fashion icon wore it, and was admired for wearing it, there would be a rush of copycat business and the embroiderer could raise prices for the duration of the interest. Notoriously, getting payment of those prices from the nobility and gentry was like getting blood from a stone - they loved to live on credit - but sometimes it did happen, and when it did, the embroiderer was set, if not for life, then at least for the rest of the year. -- source link
