rhowens: DRAGON OF LAKE CHINI ― According to a native legend, the dragon is known as Naga Seri Gumum. An old tale retells where a group of natives traveled to a dense forest and wished to settle there. A few days later, during harvest, a woman with a cane appeared and claimed that they were trespassing on her land. A holy person apologized and the woman planted her cane into the soil and gave them her permission, with the condition that they do not remove her cane until she was gone. They continued their harvest until a sudden, violent storm came. As they were running in panic, someone accidentally knocked the cane from the ground. From the hole where the cane stood, water started to flow, drowning the land and creating a lake. The cane turned into its infamous dragon. It was wildly rumored that an ancient city such as the ones in Khmer, Cambodia still stood at the bottom of the lake. The legend was further bolstered by discovered artifacts that mimics ancient Khmer artistry. Lotus that grew around the lake, a species not native to locals, was said to have been brought from Khmer by the people who lived in the sunken city. A lotus was significant in ancient South East Asian culture as a symbol of purity and enlightenment in Hindu-Buddishm. -- source link
