The Killing of a Chinese Bookie was first released on 15 February 1976.Following up his success with A Woman Under the Influence, John Cassavetes turned to a tried and true Hollywood genre, the crime film. Cassavetes knew something about the genre, appearing in the noir Edge of the City (1957) and the title character in the short-lived private detective TV series Johnny Staccato (1959-1960). Despite the usual trappings of a standard crime film (murder, double crosses, topless dancers), The Killing of a Chinese Bookie was a commercial and critical disaster when it was first released, and pulled from theaters after one week.Ben Gazzara told his friend Cassavates that he hated the film and that it was too long. Cassavetes re-edited, and re-released a 108-minute version (which was not only about 30-minutes shorter, but included footage not in the original version, and re-ordered the sequence of other scenes). It didn’t help, the film still failed to find an audience. -- source link
