St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle St George’s Chapel is a place of worship inside Windsor Castle, it is a royal chapel and it is the chapel of the Order of the Garter. It was founded in 1348 by Edward III, who started St George’s Religious College. The Order of the Garter ceremony has been held there ever since the Order was established, during Edward III’s reign, and is still held there today. From 1475, the Chapel saw much change. Edward IV began redevelopment that was continued by Henry VII and Henry VIII, with the 13th Century chapel being expanded into a more Cathedral sized chapel. During the English Civil War, St George’s Chapel was greatly destroyed. Parliamentarians broke in and looted the chapel, among the things stolen were the unfinished tomb of Henry VIII and much gold. The Chapel was not repaired until after the restoration of the monarchy. Further work was carried out under the reign of Queen Victoria, who had the East End reworked to show devotion to Prince Albert and completed other works to the Chapel. Many members of the royal family have been married in St George’s Chapel, including many of Queen Victoria’s children and the current Prince Edward. Many more members of the monarchy have also been buried in St George’s Chapel, including Henry VIII and Jane Seymour, Charles I, George IV, Edward IV and the current Queen’s mother. -- source link
