OrimeThis is a beautiful girl’s hemp kimono with hand painted motifs of crane and pine. For the Japanese, the crane–or tsuru–is considered a national treasure, appearing in art, literature and folklore. The crane is regarded as a symbol of good fortune and longevity because of its fabled life span of one thousand years. Similarly, the pine is associated with virtue, a motif of winter and New Year, and as a symbol of long life. It stands to reason that these symbols would be incorporated into a child’s kimono, wishing the wearer good fortune and a long life. The garment is in very good condition, with only slight discolorations which are visible in the closeup photos. This girl’s kimono can be dated to the 1920s.
